When you are learning English for the first time, it can be overwhelming. At Crossing Borders Languages, we offer English classes for adults so you can learn new language skills from skilled instructors in an intimate classroom setting. Beyond taking our ESL classes, there are several ways you can improve your English fluency outside of the classroom. In our previous blog, we started going over some tips for improving your fluency in English. In this blog, we will continue to go through our list.

Practice English as often as you can

The key to learning a new language is to practice frequently. In fact, studying English for ten minutes a day has more of an impact that studying it for one hour a week. Even if no one else speaks English in your household, there are plenty of ways you can practice English at home. For example, you could start listening to English audiobooks or podcasts on your way to work, or read the news in English as opposed to your native tongue. You might also try watching movies in English; if you wish to watch with your non-English-speaking friend, you could turn on subtitles for them. Additionally, you should practice thinking in English. When you are doing chores around the house, try thinking about what you are doing in English; for example, “I am vacuuming. I am washing the dishes. I am dusting.”

Practice different areas

When it comes to language learning, it is important to have balance between the different aspects of language. You need to be sure you are reading, writing, speaking, and listening to English equally to advance your skills in those different areas. One way you can make sure you are doing this is to dedicate one day per week to each of these areas. Don’t forget to also study your grammar and vocabulary!

Get an English buddy

When you are trying to acquire a new language, finding a partner to learn with you can help in a number of ways. You may find someone in one of our English classes with whom you can pair up, but if not, there are several ways you can find yourself an English buddy. For example, there are many “conversation exchange” websites online. These website allow you to meet English speakers who want to learn your native language, so you can study and practice together. However you find them, choose a partner and commit to practicing languages together at least once a week. This will help you improve your skills and give you more confidence to speak English.

Don’t give up

English is a difficult language to learn, and it is easy to get discouraged. However, the key to actually mastering the language is to never give up. If you remain committed to learning English, you will learn it. Don’t give up when it gets hard, and you will be speaking like a native English speaker in no time!
